A Job Seeker Rethinks Executive Recruiters

A Job Seeker Rethinks Executive Recruiters Executive Recruiters in a Whole New Light There was a reporter for the local paper who covered the local professional football team and the National Football League. He made a great statement once about mediocrity. He said, “Many years ago, there were 12 National Football League teams and 12 good quarterbacks. Now there are 32 teams and 12 good quarterbacks.” Wow. What a comment on mediocrity. As a job seeker, and I’m sure I speak for almost all job seekers, we tend to downplay recruiters and HR professionals  in our job searching lives. We all have had the situation where an executive recruiter never returned our call even after they recruited us for a job opening. It’s so disappointing. To us, they’ve been mediocre performers. It’s partially a sign of the times. It seems like nobody returns calls these days. We also have to realize that the executive recruiter works for their clients and not for us. It seems that there so many recruiters and so few good ones. Executive Recruiters in a Whole New Light Quite some time ago, an executive recruiter was helping me to change my resume for a job he had. He gave me a statement which, to this day, is one of my major branding statements and a substantial part of my 30 second speech! I have had quite a few recruiters contact me and remain interested despite my never quite fitting their opportunities (at least yet). It really is incredible to see their level of interest when so many others won’t even take our calls or respond to our e-mails. .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;} I had an executive recruiter, after hearing about a company that interviewed me rejecting me, go back and make an offer to the company to try to get me hired as a temp with an option to hire so they could see how good I was. That’s innovative thinking! Advice for Job Seekers So my advice for job seekers is to network with recruiters. Follow up with them. Keep yourself in their minds as they receive new positions. Make it so they are always thinking of you. I try to let those executive recruiters who have been good to me know every week or two that I am still available for work and am looking. They really appreciate it and it keeps me fresh in their minds. For me, there has been such a payoff because I have had recruiters remember me and call with opportunities that otherwise may have not been sent to me. So recruiters can be a great friend to someone looking for a job. No, there aren’t great recruiters on every agency or company team, but if you look some are out there. Find them, stay in touch, treat them well, and good things will happen. .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;} Henry Motyka is a guest blogger for Blogging4Jobs.  His work experience is very eclectic covering fundraising, finance, consulting.  Plus, hes an MBA.  Connect with Henry on Twitter @henrymotyka or on LinkedIn.

Presently, this carelessness has experienced harsh criticism by understudies and advanced education authorities, and which is all well and good. Since in spite of a few investigations that state that it doesnt work, the UKs speakers have proceeded with the drag it into you like a drill technique for educating. This is likely in light of the fact that it takes care of business. Be that as it may, does it truly? Everybody may for the most part breeze through their tests, sure. The best way to introduce yourself is to explain what your job is really about.Say what your contribution is.This ties in nicely with the previous point. But its just so important it deserves a separate point. Your professional introduction should tell the audience about your contribution to their (professional) lives. What problems do you help them solve?Be original. It doesnt mean that if youre a writer you need to prepare a self-intro essay. No. Just take an extra step and say something more about the nature of your job. Plus, the way you deliver your professional introduction matters. You know, a friendly smile works magic.Prepare.No ideas on how to make a great introduction? Take a step back and ask yourself what you want to be known for.Mind the cultural context. If youre introducing yourself to an international audience, make sure not to offend anybody.Be careful when coming up with funny ways to introduce yourself.Humor is great, but avoid cracking jokes for the sake of cracking jokes. This will give you a first-hand insight into the length, structure, and tone expected of you.If you have no reference point for your new employee self-introduction email, paragraph, or blurbImagine youre talking to a real person. Write down the introduction paragraph about yourself just the way you would normally introduce yourself professionally.Simple as that. Look at this example:How to Introduce Yourself to a New TeamEmail SampleHi!My names John. Ive just joined the marketing department as an outreach specialist.Ill be getting in touch with influencers, bloggers, and vloggers to increase our online presence. If you see a new face around, well, thats me:) We can chat about cyberpunk literature, video games, and downhill mountain biking.Cheers!JohnPS The sweet treats in th e kitchen are all for you!Remember:Before you write such an introduction about yourself, ask your colleagues to show you how they did it when they joined the team.AndWhen you finally get down to writing, imagine youre talking to someone, and let your intro flow as naturally as possible.5Best Way to Introduce Yourself (in Any Setting)But Im about to meet the parents of my 6-year-old daughters friends. Im going to a childrens party! What is the best way to introduce yourself in such a setting?SimpleBe mindful of the context. If you introduce yourself along these lines:My names William. I run a company that employs 100+ people. We trade in metal with our partners in China.Youve just made an idiot out of yourself. How about this:Im Will, Kates dad. We like to hang out together at kids parties. And... Im a sucker for chocolate chip cookies.Better?Of course!Lets break it down:The Best Way to Introduce YourselfWorks in Any SettingBe mindful of the social context.Yes, Im being repetitive. But this is the single most important thing: make your self-introduction relevant.Dont say too much.Oversharing irrelevant information will play against you. If youre attending a childrens party, focus on being a parent, and make it the central part of your introduction. You may be the president of a huge company, but theres no point in bringing this up when introducing yourself.Acknowledge the presence of others. The best introduction focuses on what you have in common with the others. Youll see how much easier it will be for everyone to establish rapport.Listen and be present.Listening to others has a huge power. Its not exactly part of introducing yourself, but the next step after all introductions are made is striking up a conversation. And great conversations can only happen when people listen to each other and are present in the moment.SummaryIf you want to introduce yourself in a professional manner remember to be mindful of the social context. In other words, make sure your intro duction fits the situation. Plus, be aware of why you're introducing yourself in the first place, and what you want others to learn about you.Resonate with the audience. Remember: youre introducing yourself to other human beings, so act like a human yourself. Smile and make eye contact. Focus on whats relevantnobody enjoys pointless rambles. So, dont say too much, avoid verbosity. Be brief and to-the-point.Last but not leastprepare. Especially if your self-introduction is part of a larger presentation to live audience. And dont aim for perfection. Just see to it that you've got everything right. Right is enough. How do you cope with introducing yourself? Do you have your own strategies? Want to share advice or ask a question? Wed love to hear from you. Give us a shout out in the comments below!

Ambition + Motivation + Mastery = Success

Ambition + Motivation + Mastery = Success There’s been a lot of press comment around the suggestion that women are not vertically ambitious, that they prefer to do a job they enjoy rather than ruthlessly compete for senior management roles. Plainly wrong, since there are also plenty of men who don’t want a top job either; it is not that women who are unambitious but that people find fulfilment at work and in life in different ways. Ambition is the driving force behind individual and organisational achievement, with the power to motivate you to be the best you can be; but it varies so much from one person to the next. My interest was piqued by another article in which a young woman asked if it was okay not to be ambitious but to settle for a job she quite liked, even though  it was not challenging and not aligned with her real interests. If you are not ambitious for career success because you prefer something else â€" as a creative or a carer, or if you want a contemplative life, perhaps, then that’s a worthy aim and great things may come of it, besides the satisfaction of pursuing your first choice. If, however, you can’t be bothered to find out how to qualify for the job of your dreams or to work hard for your ambition; that’s a waste and there’s not much sadder than wasted potential. Ambition helps you uncover the real motivations that bring you full engagement and create conditions that put you in the flow. Mastery and motivation Sometimes thought of as the acceptable face of greed, ambition can be defined as the desire for more. We all know about wanting more, research has shown that ambitious people achieve greater levels of success, whether that be a higher level of education, a more prestigious job, a higher income or more satisfaction in life. It has to be acknowledged that just because you are ambitious that’s no guarantee of success; plenty of people risk all and fail but learning from failure is important too. Real accomplishment requires mastery, otherwise you’re not ambitious, just hopeful. If you are ambitious you also probably want others to recognise your accomplishment. Research demonstrates that recognition is one of the key motivational drivers for the development of almost any type of skill. Motivation to achieve is predicated on two factors; the likelihood of achieving the desired goal and the value of the perceived rewards. Ambition, achievement and risk-taking tend to be valued in our society, though not by everyone, of course. Diversity of opinion at work is important too; it drives innovation and creativity. 10Eighty looked at women in the workplace earlier this year to examine what helps their careers and what hinders. Many see gender equality as a matter of fairness, but for business, it’s about access to talent. Achieving gender parity will make the workplace better for women and men as all will benefit from programmes that support flexibility in juggling professional and personal commitments. Gender parity at work Research by Catalyst (2004) and McKinsey Company, (2010) found that women in leadership roles bring a diversity of skills and experiences to the decision making table. More diversity in the type of people involved in leadership is often used as a proxy for more diversity of thought in leadership. Greater numbers of women in leadership roles bring more diverse skills and experiences to the decision-making table. The ILM points out that it makes sound commercial sense to promote women to senior positions, and reflect the broader consumer base of many businesses. Women are increasingly powerful consumers with a growing share of the UK’s personal wealth and 80% of purchasing power. Given the increasing skill and leadership talent shortages, supporting ambitious, well-qualified women to make the most of their skills represents a good return on the investment made in their education and career development.
