Ambition + Motivation + Mastery = Success There’s been a lot of press comment around the suggestion that women are not vertically ambitious, that they prefer to do a job they enjoy rather than ruthlessly compete for senior management roles. Plainly wrong, since there are also plenty of men who don’t want a top job either; it is not that women who are unambitious but that people find fulfilment at work and in life in different ways. Ambition is the driving force behind individual and organisational achievement, with the power to motivate you to be the best you can be; but it varies so much from one person to the next. My interest was piqued by another article in which a young woman asked if it was okay not to be ambitious but to settle for a job she quite liked, even though  it was not challenging and not aligned with her real interests. If you are not ambitious for career success because you prefer something else â€" as a creative or a carer, or if you want a contemplative life, perhaps, then that’s a worthy aim and great things may come of it, besides the satisfaction of pursuing your first choice. If, however, you can’t be bothered to find out how to qualify for the job of your dreams or to work hard for your ambition; that’s a waste and there’s not much sadder than wasted potential. Ambition helps you uncover the real motivations that bring you full engagement and create conditions that put you in the flow. Mastery and motivation Sometimes thought of as the acceptable face of greed, ambition can be defined as the desire for more. We all know about wanting more, research has shown that ambitious people achieve greater levels of success, whether that be a higher level of education, a more prestigious job, a higher income or more satisfaction in life. It has to be acknowledged that just because you are ambitious that’s no guarantee of success; plenty of people risk all and fail but learning from failure is important too. Real accomplishment requires mastery, otherwise you’re not ambitious, just hopeful. If you are ambitious you also probably want others to recognise your accomplishment. Research demonstrates that recognition is one of the key motivational drivers for the development of almost any type of skill. Motivation to achieve is predicated on two factors; the likelihood of achieving the desired goal and the value of the perceived rewards. Ambition, achievement and risk-taking tend to be valued in our society, though not by everyone, of course. Diversity of opinion at work is important too; it drives innovation and creativity. 10Eighty looked at women in the workplace earlier this year to examine what helps their careers and what hinders. Many see gender equality as a matter of fairness, but for business, it’s about access to talent. Achieving gender parity will make the workplace better for women and men as all will benefit from programmes that support flexibility in juggling professional and personal commitments. Gender parity at work Research by Catalyst (2004) and McKinsey Company, (2010) found that women in leadership roles bring a diversity of skills and experiences to the decision making table. More diversity in the type of people involved in leadership is often used as a proxy for more diversity of thought in leadership. Greater numbers of women in leadership roles bring more diverse skills and experiences to the decision-making table. The ILM points out that it makes sound commercial sense to promote women to senior positions, and reflect the broader consumer base of many businesses. Women are increasingly powerful consumers with a growing share of the UK’s personal wealth and 80% of purchasing power. Given the increasing skill and leadership talent shortages, supporting ambitious, well-qualified women to make the most of their skills represents a good return on the investment made in their education and career development.

Top Three Tips For Future Women Leaders My business, Remodista, is focused on disruptors in the retail industry through a collaborative lens. Implementing community as my business model has allowed for us to look at companies who are trendsetters and how others can stay ahead of the curve. Through that I was able to connect with executive women that were the masterminds behind this disruption and see how their role was allowing for their company to be ahead. Acting as a think tank, Remodista uses these great minds, combines their experiences and in turn, predicts upcoming trends and tests them out in real time. We look at what is working and what isn’t for companies in retail. Using community as a business model, we have been able to approach research in a new light. I am dedicated to the women we work with in retail, but I also advocate for the importance of women in executive roles across industries. There is not enough awareness of the women in these roles. I feel that inspiring other women can be done through the idea that it is possible and that’s why it’s important to recognize them. For the women pioneering and solving business challenges, I wanted there to be a way to highlight the most disruptive women in the industry, so as part of Remodista, Women2Watch in Business Disruption was born. Spending most of my time with highly successful women, as well as starting my own business, I have boiled down my top three tips for finding success as a female leader: Momentum is Key Inspiration may dwindle as you build your business. I often find that inspiration comes to me in micro moments but that gives a burst of energy that is important in the journey. For the rest of the time, when you’re not completely inspired, you have to create drive and reason to continue your success. Persistence and grit go a long way. Complacency is killer in any workplace, especially if you’re looking to be a leader. Not Everyone Will Like You, and That’s OK Good leaders are innovators. Like the disruptors I work with through Remodista, the best companies are those who are ahead of the curve. When building an innovative or disruptive business, you have to have the propensity for being disliked. Disruption and innovation make people uncomfortable. Since people are not generally fans of change, trying to push it, even when it is for the better, will be met by some form of resistance. This will only make you stronger. Let Fear Motivate You People who are high level achievers use fear to their advantage. Successful people keep fear close by and let it motivate them. Embrace the fear of breaking down barriers and building something that is new. Fear never goes away.   It just shifts into new areas as you find more traction and success. So don’t let it get the best of you. Use the courage that fear drives to your advantage. Fear and success should have a healthy amount of tension to act as motivation to achieve goals. I often say that my business wouldn’t have made sense to people just a few years ago. People couldn’t see the connection between women, disruption and retail. I believed in what I was creating and I developed something that people now see the value in. I fought through the innovation droughts, rejection and fear. And all the women I work with today have very similar stories to mine. Successful women must preserve. I did and you can too. Some say that human resource managers wont accept résumés that have no address listed because it could conceal something. Others in the industry indicate that it is becoming more common to list only a contact number and name when posting a résumé on the Internet, in order to avoid identity fraud and safeguard personal privacy. Interestingly enough, a colleague even mentioned this possibility: Employers can even look up where you live and determine the value of your home through zillow.com or the local tax assessor. They can tell when the home was purchased, the annual taxes, and even if its for sale. We certainly dont want our clients salary level determined on whether a candidate lives in a McMansion or a trailer park. Wow. The world has changed, hasnt it? How do you tackle this issue? Firstly, when posting your information online, it is critical that you do take steps to protect your identity. You should only use your name or even just your first initial and last name, and provide a cell phone number to be reached, plus an email address that doesnt disclose much more information than already provided. Any time you are posting something even on sites like Monster.com or other related job boards, there are people who pose as employers and pay the fee to access the site and promptly go to work as identity crooks. Think about what you are posting your name, occupation, employment dates, education, etc. Its a dream come true for an identity thief. If youve included your home location, one quick robbery later with just one piece of photo i.d., and suddenly, you are in for some unpleasant surprises very soon! Additionally, caution should be used when you are reviewing job boards like craigslist.com unfortunately, if that job posting sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Most reputable companies arent afraid to be up front about their contact information or company name. If you really want to pursue that opportunity, be extremely cautious about any additional requests for information without any company data coming your way. It could be yet another scam to try and capture your personal information! However, until definitive data comes from the hiring managers and human resource representatives themselves, its probably best to include your contact information when sending résumés directly to reputable organizations. There are confidentiality laws and corporate policies/procedures in place to protect applicant data. However, if you ever suspect that they have been breached or abused, you need to notify the appropriate officials immediately. Even so, heres a hair-raising example of how abuse can occur, even when the company was legitimate: Many years ago, I applied for a job at The Gap. I never heard from them about my application, but I got a phone call from a man a few weeks later, and he said he had heard I was looking for work, and that he had a telemarketing job he was hiring for at the time. I didnt recall ever meeting him nor could establish a connection as to how he got my information. At that point, I asked him how he got my information. Stupidly (does this qualify as a dumb crook story?) he told me that his girlfriend was the manager at The Gap, and she had brought home the applications for the people that they didnt end up hiring, and he was going through them. I felt so violated at the time, and immediately called The Gap and went up the ladder to talk to a supervisor, and promptly reported the incident. I didnt even think to call the police!! (Silly me) Obviously, the manager had taken my personal information and transported off-site (and back in those days, you felt compelled to provide your SSN# on an application) this guy had the whole nine yards!!! I dont know what happened in that instance to either the woman or the man, but since then, I have been acutely aware of what to put and what not to disclose and when. Your credit, your financial standing and your reputation stand depend on it!

Keep yourself marketable. If you’re looking for a new job, then use your “in-between” time to get any training or education you may need. Job requirements can change over the years. Industries can change. So make sure you stay current with the demands of the market by assessing your skills and qualifications with what the market is demanding. Most industries have a kind of license or certification that’s highly valued â€" such as project management certification, marketing certification, financial planning licenses, and so on. So keep yourself marketable by staying current with required training and education. Another strategy for keeping yourself marketable when you’re not working, is to start freelancing or consulting. This shows hiring managers that you take initiative and that you’re considered an expert in your field by others. Also, join an association’s Board of Directors, or at minimum, a committee. These strategies will help keep you visible, expand your network, and boost your resume. 2. Fish where the fish are. In other words, know where your potential employers are. Find out by reading trade magazines, industry publications, company websites and websites that advertise job openings like CareerJournal.com, and CareerBuilder.com to learn which industries are hiring, which companies are hiring, and what the hot jobs are. You can also learn about companies that are hiring by attending industry conferences, trade shows, business networking events and association meetings. Another good idea is to join professional networking sites such as LinkedIn.com to get connected to industry leaders and company decision makers. Make it a priority to get connected, and stay connected, to people who can inspire you, hire you, or introduce you to others who could potentially hire you. 3. Be a resource to others. When you’re in the market for a new job, you never want to give the impression that you need a job. Instead, you want to be seen as someone who’s a leader, a driver, a mentor to others, and someone who’s resourceful â€" who knows how to get things done and get results. This is one reason why you want to consult, freelance, or volunteer while you’re in between jobs. So here’s a tip â€" instead of sending the message, “I need you to give me a job”, you should send the message, “I’m someone who is resourceful, insightful and has a specific area of expertise.” In other words, “I’m someone YOU should get to know!” This is a major shift in the way others perceive you. One way you can do that is to send out personal notes with links to cool videos, reports, press releases, or websites that you think might interest them.
