Top Three Tips For Future Women Leaders
Top Three Tips For Future Women Leaders My business, Remodista, is focused on disruptors in the retail industry through a collaborative lens. Implementing community as my business model has allowed for us to look at companies who are trendsetters and how others can stay ahead of the curve. Through that I was able to connect with executive women that were the masterminds behind this disruption and see how their role was allowing for their company to be ahead. Acting as a think tank, Remodista uses these great minds, combines their experiences and in turn, predicts upcoming trends and tests them out in real time. We look at what is working and what isnât for companies in retail. Using community as a business model, we have been able to approach research in a new light. I am dedicated to the women we work with in retail, but I also advocate for the importance of women in executive roles across industries. There is not enough awareness of the women in these roles. I feel that inspiring other women can be done through the idea that it is possible and thatâs why itâs important to recognize them. For the women pioneering and solving business challenges, I wanted there to be a way to highlight the most disruptive women in the industry, so as part of Remodista, Women2Watch in Business Disruption was born. Spending most of my time with highly successful women, as well as starting my own business, I have boiled down my top three tips for finding success as a female leader: Momentum is Key Inspiration may dwindle as you build your business. I often find that inspiration comes to me in micro moments but that gives a burst of energy that is important in the journey. For the rest of the time, when youâre not completely inspired, you have to create drive and reason to continue your success. Persistence and grit go a long way. Complacency is killer in any workplace, especially if youâre looking to be a leader. Not Everyone Will Like You, and Thatâs OK Good leaders are innovators. Like the disruptors I work with through Remodista, the best companies are those who are ahead of the curve. When building an innovative or disruptive business, you have to have the propensity for being disliked. Disruption and innovation make people uncomfortable. Since people are not generally fans of change, trying to push it, even when it is for the better, will be met by some form of resistance. This will only make you stronger. Let Fear Motivate You People who are high level achievers use fear to their advantage. Successful people keep fear close by and let it motivate them. Embrace the fear of breaking down barriers and building something that is new. Fear never goes away. It just shifts into new areas as you find more traction and success. So donât let it get the best of you. Use the courage that fear drives to your advantage. Fear and success should have a healthy amount of tension to act as motivation to achieve goals. I often say that my business wouldnât have made sense to people just a few years ago. People couldnât see the connection between women, disruption and retail. I believed in what I was creating and I developed something that people now see the value in. I fought through the innovation droughts, rejection and fear. And all the women I work with today have very similar stories to mine. Successful women must preserve. I did and you can too. This guest post was authored by Kelly Stickel Kelly Stickel is the founder and CEO of Remodista, a social think tank examining global retail and fintech disruption. Be Careful About How Much Résumé Info You Post Online - Pathfinder Careers
Be Careful About How Much Résumé Info You Post Online - Pathfinder Careers Be Careful About How Much Résumé Info You Post Online Exactly how much contact information should a person should list on their résumé? Some say that human resource managers wont accept résumés that have no address listed because it could conceal something. Others in the industry indicate that it is becoming more common to list only a contact number and name when posting a résumé on the Internet, in order to avoid identity fraud and safeguard personal privacy. Interestingly enough, a colleague even mentioned this possibility: Employers can even look up where you live and determine the value of your home through zillow.com or the local tax assessor. They can tell when the home was purchased, the annual taxes, and even if its for sale. We certainly dont want our clients salary level determined on whether a candidate lives in a McMansion or a trailer park. Wow. The world has changed, hasnt it? How do you tackle this issue? Firstly, when posting your information online, it is critical that you do take steps to protect your identity. You should only use your name or even just your first initial and last name, and provide a cell phone number to be reached, plus an email address that doesnt disclose much more information than already provided. Any time you are posting something even on sites like Monster.com or other related job boards, there are people who pose as employers and pay the fee to access the site and promptly go to work as identity crooks. Think about what you are posting your name, occupation, employment dates, education, etc. Its a dream come true for an identity thief. If youve included your home location, one quick robbery later with just one piece of photo i.d., and suddenly, you are in for some unpleasant surprises very soon! Additionally, caution should be used when you are reviewing job boards like craigslist.com unfortunately, if that job posting sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Most reputable companies arent afraid to be up front about their contact information or company name. If you really want to pursue that opportunity, be extremely cautious about any additional requests for information without any company data coming your way. It could be yet another scam to try and capture your personal information! However, until definitive data comes from the hiring managers and human resource representatives themselves, its probably best to include your contact information when sending résumés directly to reputable organizations. There are confidentiality laws and corporate policies/procedures in place to protect applicant data. However, if you ever suspect that they have been breached or abused, you need to notify the appropriate officials immediately. Even so, heres a hair-raising example of how abuse can occur, even when the company was legitimate: Many years ago, I applied for a job at The Gap. I never heard from them about my application, but I got a phone call from a man a few weeks later, and he said he had heard I was looking for work, and that he had a telemarketing job he was hiring for at the time. I didnt recall ever meeting him nor could establish a connection as to how he got my information. At that point, I asked him how he got my information. Stupidly (does this qualify as a dumb crook story?) he told me that his girlfriend was the manager at The Gap, and she had brought home the applications for the people that they didnt end up hiring, and he was going through them. I felt so violated at the time, and immediately called The Gap and went up the ladder to talk to a supervisor, and promptly reported the incident. I didnt even think to call the police!! (Silly me) Obviously, the manager had taken my personal information and transported off-site (and back in those days, you felt compelled to provide your SSN# on an application) this guy had the whole nine yards!!! I dont know what happened in that instance to either the woman or the man, but since then, I have been acutely aware of what to put and what not to disclose and when. Your credit, your financial standing and your reputation stand depend on it!

3 Easy Ways to Put Yourself in High Demand with Hiring Managers
3 Easy Ways to Put Yourself in High Demand with Hiring Managers 3 Easy Ways to Put Yourself in High Demand with Hiring Managers 3 Easy Ways to Put Yourself in High Demand with Hiring Managers March 18, 2011 by Career Coach Sherri Thomas 1 Comment As a leading Career Coach for professionals and executives, my phone rings every day with professionals (just like you!) looking to make a career change. I know what a tough job market it is right now, but my clients are consistently able to put themselves in high demand with new clients, managers and hiring managers. In fact, 3 of my clients are interviewing this week! If youâre looking for your next career opportunity â" then I have three (3) of my biggest career changing success strategies to help you change your career faster⦠1. Keep yourself marketable. If youâre looking for a new job, then use your âin-betweenâ time to get any training or education you may need. Job requirements can change over the years. Industries can change. So make sure you stay current with the demands of the market by assessing your skills and qualifications with what the market is demanding. Most industries have a kind of license or certification thatâs highly valued â" such as project management certification, marketing certification, financial planning licenses, and so on. So keep yourself marketable by staying current with required training and education. Another strategy for keeping yourself marketable when youâre not working, is to start freelancing or consulting. This shows hiring managers that you take initiative and that youâre considered an expert in your field by others. Also, join an associationâs Board of Directors, or at minimum, a committee. These strategies will help keep you visible, expand your network, and boost your resume. 2. Fish where the fish are. In other words, know where your potential employers are. Find out by reading trade magazines, industry publications, company websites and websites that advertise job openings like CareerJournal.com, and CareerBuilder.com to learn which industries are hiring, which companies are hiring, and what the hot jobs are. You can also learn about companies that are hiring by attending industry conferences, trade shows, business networking events and association meetings. Another good idea is to join professional networking sites such as LinkedIn.com to get connected to industry leaders and company decision makers. Make it a priority to get connected, and stay connected, to people who can inspire you, hire you, or introduce you to others who could potentially hire you. 3. Be a resource to others. When youâre in the market for a new job, you never want to give the impression that you need a job. Instead, you want to be seen as someone whoâs a leader, a driver, a mentor to others, and someone whoâs resourceful â" who knows how to get things done and get results. This is one reason why you want to consult, freelance, or volunteer while youâre in between jobs. So hereâs a tip â" instead of sending the message, âI need you to give me a jobâ, you should send the message, âIâm someone who is resourceful, insightful and has a specific area of expertise.â In other words, âIâm someone YOU should get to know!â This is a major shift in the way others perceive you. One way you can do that is to send out personal notes with links to cool videos, reports, press releases, or websites that you think might interest them. Another tip is to invite them to business networking events, and introduce them to other movers and shakers in the industry. The bottom line is that successful professionals are drawn to other successful professionals and those who are resourceful. So get personal with your professional network and show them how you can help them be more successful. And finally If youâre ready to make a career change, get some professional help. Youâll have an easier, quicker, less stressful journey ahead of you when you have a partner who can give you the roadmap on how to reach your goal. 5 Ways to Avoid Losing Your New Hires - Career Advice Blog for Millennials
5 Ways to Avoid Losing Your New Hires - Career Advice Blog for Millennials With the economy on the rebound, employees today are all about job hopping â" so why are they all leaving you? Where are they all going? What causes them to leave, and how can you convince them to stay? The good news is that increasing employee retention is one of the most well-studied and well-documented phenomena in the entire human resource field. The bad news â" at least if your company has trouble holding onto employees â" is that employee retention is linked to employee happiness. That means in order to reduce turnover, youâve got to address the big, difficult problems at the heart of your organization. Here are five tips to help you do that, and avoid losing your new hires: Gather Better Data For many companies, the only source of information about why employees leave is what can be gathered during the exit interview. But trying to figure out why employees are leaving while theyâve got one foot out the door is a bit like asking a stampeding herd whatâs got them so spooked. Instead, talk to your employees early and often. Ask them difficult questions â" questions you know will have answers that could make you uncomfortable. Poll them with survey apps that offer quantifiable results, and look at those results long and hard. Coordinate data. Roll up your sleeves, open Excel, and make a pie-chart or two. Your chief purpose here is to figure out when employees are leaving and why, in order to establish what weâll call âchoke pointsâ. Stop the Bleeding with Preventative Incentives Itâs hard to address systemic problems in an organization if that organization is in a constant state of turnover and turmoil. So, as a stop-gap measure, start getting creative with how to open up your choke points, and convince employees to hang in there while you work to fix their concerns. One way to do that â" in the short term anyway â" is to offer time-based pay incentives. If you notice the majority of your employees are taking off at the six-month mark, offer new hires a pay-bump after six months if theyâve performed well during training. Consider it an investment, because however much money it takes to hold on to employees, it almost certainly takes more to train new ones. But while youâre establishing preventative incentives, why stop at time-in/money-out? The best way to design reward-structures is by establishing clear and achievable goals. Goals Goals are key to the ongoing sustainability of any organization. Put simply, fair but challenging goals allow employees to connect more with their work. Engage your employees by giving them goals that matter. Then, encourage employees to set their own goals in addition to yours. These should be SMART goals that help them grow personally and professionally in their work. Schedule routine check-ins in addition to semi-annual reviews, and have them evaluate themselves prior to each meeting so you can go over the progress together. One of my favorite goal-oriented strategies is to have a set progression path with specific, measurable, and timely goals that, if accomplished, will result in a promotion. Thereâs no better motivation than a promotion, and employees love knowing how they are performing. With the ambiguity removed, theyâre more likely to work harder towards their goals and stick around so they can get promoted to the next level. Hire for soft skills first, and hard skills second Unless youâre a cut-throat IT company in the heart of Silicon Valley, chances are your skill/degree requirements are more flexible than you think. Your skill and degree requirements are based on hard skills, which can be taught to someone who has just joined your workforce. A growing body of evidence, however, shows that soft skills, such as communication and adaptability, are what actually drive success in the workplace. That said, trying to teach soft skills to someone who does not already possess them can be a dicey endeavor. Teaching hard skills, on the other hand, is not only possible, but itâs a canny business decision. In addition, the skill-gap between higher education and the workforce is increasing every year. It makes sense, then, that the best place to learn hard skills is on the job, and those in charge of the workforce should not shy away from the teaching these skills. So hire someone for the position who possesses soft skills even if he or she may not have all the skill or degree requirements youâre hoping for. Have an actual onboarding process The perils of the recession taught companies a lot of smart habits, but as the recession lifted, many of those smart habits became dumb ones. One of the worst offenders has been the disappearance of entry-level positions. With the elimination of the ground floor, onboarding has also fallen by the wayside. Increasingly, employers expect new hires to hit the ground running on day one. New hires are saddled with exactly as much work as veteran employees, and the onboarding mentality equates to âsink or swim.â Unsurprisingly, that results in a lot of sinking. And when employees start to sink, most wonât wait around to drown. Theyâll jump ship and swim for better shores. Donât let your employees sink. Pass out water-wings and swimming lessons the second they set foot in the door. Just as a rising tide lifts all boats, better employee training results in higher productivity and increased retention. Remember to Take Human Resources Seriously Thereâs a reason human resources are called human resources. Itâs because those who make up the human resources department offer an implicit reminder that, just like any other business capital, your employees are a precious and finite commodity. Retention and productivity are linked to employee happiness â" so think about happiness as a concrete currency. You can trade it, spend it, invest it â" or waste it. Everything you do has a cost, and if your employees are jumping ship, that means somewhere in the budget, your numbers arenât adding up. So start moving proactively. Get there first. Retaining employees is not a patch-job measure. Its proactive maintenance, and it has to be ongoing. If you want to keep employees, figure out why theyâre leaving. Then, get busy fixing the problem.
